Sugar Cane Rat

I was watching Bizarre Foods on Travel Channel, and this restaurant in Uganda serves this rodent. I've never even heard of it, but it's HUGE. They can grow up to 18 pounds and feed on grass. Not surprisingly, it wreaks havoc on sugarcane plantations, so farmers actually fiercely protect the pythons that they unleash in the fields to eat the rats.

Good stuff.

I also saw this feature on Travel Channel and was horrified that it was served up in restaurants in Uganda! the carcass was displayed as well as the stirfry entree, and it was interesting in that the species grew to that size (partly on its diet containing sugar), and was acceptable as protein in diets, was edible when seasoned.
